We are focusing our work on raising the standards in the road transport sector. The participants endorsed the campaigns of the section and committed themselves to taking them to the next level.

There was a discussion on raising standards, with a panel than included contributions from young transport workers, women transport workers, Toll group and the International Road Union.

The chair of the ITF road section, Tony Sheldon, said: “We have to go after those companies at the top of the supply chain, the economic employers who are making life miserable for our workers. The decisions we make in this conference are life and death, it is our unions who have the power to make life better for all road user.”

The KPTU, Korea, proposed a motion that the ITF and its unions strengthens its global campaign for safe rates of pay for road transport workers.

President of the KPTU Korea, Jeonghan Kim, said: “In Korea we have struggled to make the government listen. We are showing that we can make things better for road transport workers by winning safe rates legislation.”

Finally, participants were asked to show solidarity for TUMTIS, Turkey, that has won its battle for recognition from DHL, but still some of its members have not been reinstated after being sacked for their union work. The entire group gathered around the delegates from Turkey for a photograph to send to the workers with solidarity greetings from the ITF Congress.
